Postdoctoral Researcher in Experimental Physiology with focus on Inflammatory Muscle Diseases

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

Do you want to deepen the understanding of the mechanisms behind muscle weakness in inflammatory muscle diseases while working in a world-leading research environment? The Department of Physiology and Pharmacology offers a dynamic and international atmosphere where translational research meets clinical relevance. As a postdoctoral researcher with us, you will have the opportunity to drive groundbreaking experimental studies and collaborate with leading researchers in physiology and rheumatology.

Your mission

The position involves experimental research focusing on the mechanisms underlying skeletal muscle dysfunction in idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (myositis). The duties include:

  • Driving experimental projects that combine mechanistic studies at the cellular and single-fiber level with analyses linked to patient data.
  • Performing advanced physiological methodologies, including skeletal muscle dissection, handling animal models, and force measurements in isolated intact/dissected muscle preparations and single muscle fibers.
  • Conducting intracellular calcium (Ca2+) measurements and mitochondrial function assays.
  • Teaching and tutoring undergraduate and medical students in physiology in Swedish.
  • Carrying out research studies, some of which may be conducted within the framework of the Swedish Total Defence R&D program.

Your profile

To be eligible for employment as a postdoctor, a PhD or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a Swedish PhD is required. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled at the latest at the time of the employment decision. Completion of your doctoral degree within the last three years is considered an advantage.

Qualifications and experience:

  • A PhD degree in medical science, physiology, or a closely related field.
  • Documented hands-on experience in experimental muscle physiology, including skeletal muscle dissection and force measurements in isolated muscles and single fibers.
  • Practical experience with intracellular Ca2+ measurements and handling animal models.
  • Experience working with and analyzing patient data/samples (e.g., serum or muscle biopsies from myositis patients).
  • Fluency in Swedish (written and spoken) with the ability and experience to teach physiology in Swedish.

Additional merits:

  • Experience or background related to total defence environments (e.g., completed military service, military leadership training, or research collaborations within total defence R&D programs).
  • Previous teaching experience in physiology, anatomy, or clinical diagnostics.
  • As a person, you are proactive, meticulous, and possess strong capabilities for both independent work and interdisciplinary collaboration.
