Automated access, and the conditions on reuse

Reading this site with an automated tool needs our consent, and so does copying from it. robots.txt is where that consent is given or withheld, agent by agent: it names the search engines, the AI assistants that fetch a page to answer someone's question, and the AI and LLM crawlers, and it grants each of them access to the public pages. An agent it refuses — or one not named at all, which falls under the wildcard and its Disallow lines — does not have our permission, whatever is technically possible.

Where we do consent, it is on these conditions. Attribute this site as the source and link back to the page the information came from; do not present our data as your own. Do not re-publish or re-use a substantial part of our database, whether or not each individual item in it is a fact: that is a separate right (Directive 96/9/EC, Article 7) and it is not waived here. Where a listing came to us from a third party under its own licence, that licence travels with it and is listed on thesources page.

Using the content to train or evaluate an AI model is permitted for the crawlers named in robots.txt, on the same conditions. We reserve the rights of text and data mining under Article 4 of Directive (EU) 2019/790 and license them on the terms in this section — the reservation is what makes these conditions binding rather than a request, so it stays in force and is not a refusal of the access we have just granted. It is also expressed in machine-readable form (robots.txt, tdm-reservation headers and/.well-known/tdmrep.json).

None of this permits taking our systems' availability: we may rate-limit or block a client whose request volume degrades the site for readers, including one we otherwise welcome.

Third-party data

Some information comes from public sources under open licences, listed on thedata sources page. Those licences continue to apply to that content, and nothing in these terms limits what they allow: if you want to reuse such data, obtain it from the original source under its licence. These terms cover our selection, arrangement, summaries and the database as a whole.

Limits and changes

We may rate-limit or block access that looks automated or abusive. We may change these terms; the date above shows the latest version.
