About the position

The University of Stavanger holds an open position as a grant in mathematics education at the Faculty of Education and Humanities, the Institute of Primary Education, Sports and Special Education. The position is available from 01.01.2027.

The scholarship position leads to a doctoral degree and provides an opportunity to develop research skills in an active and stimulating professional environment.

The recruiter will be included in the doctoral programme in education and humanities. The programme includes a part of training, work on a scientific thesis based on independent research, participation in national and international research environments, dissemination of research, examination and dissertation. Read more about the training of researchers at UiS atour web pages.

The scholarship holder is employed for a period of three years with a full course of research or four years with a course of research combined with other career-promoting work. This is clarified in the recruitment process.

As a scholarship at the UiS, you will receive support for professional and career development through guidance, competence development and career planning.

Research Theme

The recruiter becomes part of the research group on mathematics education at the Institute, which is a leading national research community with extensive international cooperation. The research theme for the scholarship position is related to the teaching model "Tending Classroom" (TK). The model has a significant potential for the development of work relevance, timeliness and bridge construction between teaching on campus and teaching at our collaborative schools. We use the model with both teachers and primary school teachers, and we have researched so far on the work with experienced teachers in school.

The TK model is based on limited research from Canada and the United States, and aims to promote deeper mathematical learning by establishing a teaching context in which pupils and primary school teachers engage in real mathematical thinking and problem solving, rather than imitation and pugging. The model consists of 14 research-based practices that the teacher can use to initiate and maintain students' mathematical thinking. The TK model has gained increasing topicality in Norwegian school, and recent research shows that the model can contribute to a highly interactive learning environment where students develop mathematical ideas in common. Research also underscores the teacher's central role in leading the dialogue, and supports the students' work on creating coherence and deepening in the mathematical ideas the class explores. However, there is limited knowledge of what primary school teachers learn when a campus course is designed according to the TK model.

The purpose of the TK model is to improve mathematical learning by establishing a classroom context in which students/teachers are engaged in genuine mathematical thinking and problem solving. The scholarship position will therefore examine relevant issues related to the use of the TK model in teacher training – a research field that has been explored to a small extent nationally, and limited internationally.

Project sketch

As an applicant, you shall draw up a preliminary project outline for a doctoral project within the research topic described.

The project outline shall account for the project’s issue, relevance, theoretical and methodological approach. The sketch, which should not exceed more than five pages, will be included in the assessment of competence.

If you are hired, the project outline and the project progress plan will be further developed in cooperation with the supervisors in the first three months of the period of employment and form the basis for the final plan for the doctoral project. Project outline template can be foundHere.
