From the ad

The Department of Chemistry - Ångström conducts research and education in the chemistry field. The department has more than 270 employees and has a turnover of 300 million SEK. At the department's six programs, we conduct very successful research of a high international standard. We have a large number of externally funded research projects, often with international cooperation and we see continued good growth in our subject area. The department has education assignments in engineering programs and master's programs. More information is available on our website. (https://kemi.uu.se/angstrom/?languageId=1).

Work duties:

The project concerns the preparation of photoactive metal complexes and their application in catalysis of small molecule activation, and has organic chemistry, coordination chemistry and spectroscopy components. The systems will be characterized using traditional organic as well as electrochemical, photochemical and spectroscopic methods. The researcher will develop lanthanide-catalyzed transformations. They will synthesize ligands and their metal complexes, perform chemical and spectroscopic characterization of the complexes, and evaluate their photophysical and photochemical behavior. They will write research reports and publications and present their research results at departmental and group meetings as well as national and international conferences.

The position involves the supervision of undergraduate, MSc, and doctoral students, the coordination of laboratory work, and the training of new research group members, and administrative tasks associated with some of these duties. They may also include teaching, up to 20% of the working time. The project will be partly carried out in collaboration with partners at Uppsala University. Am. Chem. Soc. 2023, 145, 22555; Org. Lett. 2024, 26, 10752; Chem 2025, 102547; Chem, 2025, 102450.

Requirements:

PhD degree in Chemistry or a related subject, or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in Chemistry. The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Post doctoral research experience of at least one year is necessary.

The assessment of applications is based primarily on the applicant's ability to conduct independent research based on scientific skill. Greater importance is attached to the quality of individual scientific work, than to the number of publications.

Consideration will also be given to good collaborative skills, drive and independence, and how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen ongoing research within the department, and how they stand to contribute to its future development.

Further requirements:

  • excellent spoken and written English
  • ability to work as a team
  • experience of organic or inorganic synthesis and small-molecule activation
  • experience of photocatalysis, lanthanide chemistry and lanthanide spectroscopy

Desirable qualifications:

Work experience from the chemical industry, previous experience with supervision of PhD and MSc students, and participation in collaborative research projects is advantageous.
