The Department of Political Science is an international academic environment that welcomes students, researchers and staff from all over the world. Our research is about topics such as political institutions, elections, opinion and democracy, international and European policies, environmental policy, corruption and political ideas. The Department of Political Science at the University of Gothenburg is ranked in Sweden and one of the 10–15 main in Europe within its field of study, according to the global Shanghai ranking of academic subjects for 2024. We organize a large number of research seminars and workshops within the department's various research areas. We offer training at all levels in both Swedish and English. Total studying around 1 400 people with us, and we are about 170 employees.

Political science is the study of politics.

Tasks

The employment as a postdoctoral is aimed at the fact that after a doctoral degree, the employee gives an early opportunity to develop its independence as a researcher and create the conditions for further merit. The person who is employed as postdoctoral should mainly conduct research. Teaching can also be included in the tasks, however, to a maximum of one fifth of working hours.

The person who is hired will be part of research collaboration and integrated into the research environment at the Department of Political Science, including the Center for Environmental Political Studies (CEPS) and Quality of Government (QoG) Institute. The employment offers very good opportunities for intellectual development, cooperation and supervision, while there are great opportunities to develop an independent research agenda and academic profile. The project also offers opportunities for international cooperation, conference participation, method development and ambitious new data collection.

We therefore expect that the person who is employed takes an independent role in the development of high scientific quality studies within the project's overall framework and contributes to publications in leading international journals.

Permissions

Eligibility for employment as a teacher is regulated in the Higher Education Ordinance 4 Cape and Gothenburg University Employment Order.

Authorized to be employed as postdoctoral is the person who has completed a doctoral degree, artistic doctoral degree or who has a foreign degree that is considered to correspond to a doctoral degree. This authorization requirement must be met at the latest at the time when the employment decision is made.

In the first place, it should be in question that has exceeded graduates a maximum of three years before the end of the application period. Even the person who has exemplified earlier should be considered primarily, if there are special reasons. With special reasons, leave for illness is meant due to illness, parental leave, trust assignments in trade union organizations, service in the total defense, or other similar circumstances and clinical service or the subject area relevant service / assignment.

Criteria

You should have a doctoral degree in political science or other topic that is relevant to the project, at the latest at the time when the employment decision is made. We are looking for you with good methodological skills and ability to develop stringent and creative research designs. These include the use of survey surveys and experiments, registry data, quantitative and qualitative text analysis and interviews. Specialization in corruption, climate and environmental policies or related areas is merit.

You should have a strong interest in co-operative research and show ambition and ability to produce high quality research, both independently and as part of a research team.

We are also interested in candidates who appreciate developing creative research designs and theoretically motivated empirical studies. Interest to develop new methodological skills and to work over subject boundaries are valued high. You should have the ability to work constructively and efficiently in a collaborative research environment while developing own ideas and your research profile.

Very good knowledge of English in speech and writing is required.

To succeed in the employment you must have an eye for details, good organizational and able to solve problems. You have very good communication and cooperation skills.
