Special topic description This project focuses on the development of GPU accelerated, high resolution simulation models for thermal rush in lithium ion batteries, modules, battery pack and complete battery systems. Thermal rush is a chain reaction that leads to an uncontrolled release of the energy stored in a battery cell, which can result in fires and other dangerous events that are difficult to limit. As battery system becomes larger and more complex, the need for calculating effective predictive tools that can describe the underlying physical and chemical processes over several scales.

The project will be implemented in collaboration with Scania Industrial Battery Systems and partners within Compelt. The main objective of the postdoctoral project is to develop the next generation GPU-based simulation methodology in OpenFOAM to predict initiation and spread of thermal rush on cell and module level. Special emphasis will be placed on utilizing modern heterogeneous calculation architectures to enable large-scale, high-resolution simulations of reacting currents. The models developed at the cellular level will then be linked to simulations on modular, pack and system level to improve the ability to predict how thermal rush is spread in practical battery systems.
