Klinisk Institut leverer forskningsbaseret undervisning til alle fagområder på den lægevidenskabelige kandidatuddannelse, og bedriver forskning inden for de kliniske specialer. 
Klinisk Institut arbejder tæt sammen med de nordjyske hospitaler og almen praksis om undervisning og forskning. Der foregår undervisning af medicinstuderende på flere hospitalsmatrikler og i almen praksis i Region Nordjylland.  

Instituttet har tilknyttet cirka 40 forskningsenheder med hvert sit lægefaglige speciale. Ud over disse forskningsenheder har instituttet tilknyttet en række andre forskningsenheder og centre. Hovedparten af instituttets personale har, ud over ansættelsen på instituttet, samtidig en hospitalsansættelse.
