Projektbeskrivning

Forskarutbildningsämne:Electrical and system technology

Autonomous systems are increasingly used together with people to perform complex, coordinated tasks. In these environments, autonomous systems handle strict spatial and temporal limitations, while in real time, they adapt to overall commands, unexpected obstacles and disturbances in the surroundings. Enabling reliable human and robot collaboration requires new mathematical grounds and calculation tools that combine decision making, planning and governance.

We are looking for an exceptionally skilled doctoral student to conduct research in the interface between game theory, hybrid systems and control technology for autonomous multi-agent systems. The service is included in the flagship project "Human-in-the-Loop Autonomy via Hybrid Games" within the framework of Digital Futures. The work will include both mathematical grounds for hybrid games and design of computational manageable control systems for implementation on physical robot platforms.

The research will treat:

  • Hybrid dynamic games during task specifications based on temporal logic;
  • Game theoretical modeling of interaction between man and robot;
  • Experimental validation on platforms for multirobot systems and underwater robotics;

Tutorial:Deputy Lecturer Giuseppe Belgiooso and Professor Dimos Dimarogonas is proposed to supervise the doctoral student. Decisions are taken on admission

Eligibility for admission

To be admitted to postgraduate education (Cape 7 39 § The Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant is required to have basic eligibility:

  • disposed a degree at advanced level, or
  • Fulfilled course claims on at least 240 High school credits, at least 60 High school credits at advanced level, or
  • In any other way within or outside the country, equivalent knowledge is mainly acquired.

In addition to the above there is also a mandatory requirement in English corresponding to English B / 6.

Selection

To succeed with your doctoral studies on KTH, you need to be targeted and persistent in your work. In selecting the applicants, the ability is assessed to:

  • independently pursue his work ahead,
  • able to cooperate with others,
  • have a professional approach and
  • Analyze and work with complex issues.

A strong background in the mathematical tools necessary for the project, especially in optimization and control theory, is required. Knowledge of game theory, hybrid systems or multiagent systems, model predictive regulation or formal methods is merit. Since the project includes both numerical and experimental work, expertise in programming and numerical simulation, and any practical experience of robot platforms, is also valuable.

Selected candidates must be able to provide contact information to at least one academic or professional reference. The candidate must be able to show high motivation for doctoral studies.

After the eligibility requirements, great emphasis will be added to personal qualities.

Target degree: Doctoral degree

Information about admission and employment

Only the one who has been adopted to postgraduate education may be employed as a doctoral student. The total employment period may not be longer than that corresponds to education at full-time postgraduate for four years. An employee doctoral student can to a limited extent (at most 20 %) perform certain tasks within eg. education and administration. A new employment as a doctoral student applies for a maximum of one year, the employment may then be renewed by a maximum of two years at a time.

As a doctoral student, you get part of KTH's employment benefits and has a monthly salary according to KTH's doctoral salary agreement. Read more about research studies at KTH | KTH | Sweden.

Project description

Third-cycle subject: Electrical Engineering

Autonomous systems are increasingly deployed alongside humans to carry out complex coordinated tasks. In these settings, autonomous systems must handle strict spatial and temporal constraints while adapting in real time to supervisory commands, unexpected obstacles, and environmental disturbances. Enabling trustworthy human–robot collaboration calls for new mathematical foundations and computational tools that unify decision-making, planning, and control.

We are seeking an exceptional doctoral student to conduct research at the intersection of game theory and control for multi-agent autonomous systems. The position is part of the Digital Futures project Human-in-the-Loop Autonomy via Hybrid Games. The work will span both mathematical foundations of hybrid games and the design of computationally tractable controllers for deployment on real robotic platforms.

The research will address:

  • Hybrid dynamic games under temporal logic task specifications;
  • Game-theoretic modelling of human–robot interaction;
  • Experimental validation on multi-robot and underwater robotic platforms;

Supervision: Assistant Prof. Giuseppe Belgioioso and Prof. Dimos Dimarogonas are proposed to supervise the doctoral student. Decisions are made on admission

Admission requirements

To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § Swedish Higher Education Ordinance), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:

  • passed a second cycle degree (for example a master's degree), or
  • completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 second-cycle higher education credits, or
  • acquired, in some other way within or outside the country, substantially equivalent knowledge

In addition to the above, there is also a mandatory requirement for English equivalent to English B/6.

Selection

In order to succeed as a doctoral student at KTH you need to be goal oriented and persevering in your work. During the selection process, candidates will be assessed upon their ability to:

  • independently pursue his or her work
  • collaborate with others,
  • have a professional approach and
  • analyze and work with complex issues.

A strong background in optimization and automatic control is required. Familiarity with game theory, hybrid systems, MPC, or formal methods will be advantageous. Proficiency in programming, and any prior hands-on experience with robotic platforms, will also be beneficial.

Selected candidates must be able to provide contact information to at least one academic or professional reference. The candidate must be able to demonstrate high motivation for doctoral studies.

After the qualification requirements, great emphasis will be placed on personal skills.
