Optimisation of sectoral energy systems

Scientific staff:in (f/m/d, full-time) for optimising sector-specific energy systems

30.09.2026,Academic staff

The Chair of Energy Systems is looking for reinforcement for the Energy System Analysis Team from November/December. Her research area covers a wide range of aspects of a sustainable transformation of energy systems. Sounds exciting? We look forward to receiving your application.

The project
In existing supra-regional energy system models, the heat sector is often presented only in a simplified way due to its high heterogeneity or taken into account via fixed boundary conditions. The ThermoFlex project closes this gap by developing a methodology for detailed mapping of the heat sector in energy system optimizations. For this purpose, high-building heat requirements are clustered in so-called type areas. ==References====External links== a. the local potential of renewable heat sources, temperature levels, settlement structures, industry-specific needs and the costs of possible district heating networks.

Your tasks
In the team you are working in particular on the development of methods for the detailed illustration of the heat sector in energy system models. To do this, you create building-specific heat demand profiles for low and high temperature applications, develop criteria for the formation of representative type areas, expand a Germany-wide energy system model and carry out corresponding optimizations as well as their evaluation. Further research tasks include the techno-economic optimization of district heating grid structures as well as the implementation of sector-connected energy system optimizations at district level. In addition, you contribute to the overarching tasks of projects and the chair, e.g. through the organisation of meetings as well as the supervision of courses.

Your profile
They have an above-average university degree in energy technology, mechanical engineering, computer science or a related course of study and have a profound understanding of the fundamental connections of energy conversion. Ideally, you will also bring with you knowledge or initial experience in energy system modelling, programming, heat supply, the processing of geoinformation data or the analysis of large amounts of data. They communicate safely in German and English in word and writing. Personally, you will be impressed by your own initiative, organizational skills, creativity and team skills, as well as by your enthusiasm for one of the most exciting and socially relevant research fields of our time: the sustainable transformation of energy systems.

General information about your application
They will be part of a dedicated and interdisciplinary team of around 50 employees at the Chair, which will work together on solutions for the sustainable energy supply of the future.
The full-time job is paid according to TV-L E13 and limited in accordance with WissZeitVG. It serves the scientific qualification with the aim of the doctorate. The start of your employment is scheduled for November or December 2026.
We expressly welcome applications from women.
Please send your application with cover letter, CV and certificates as a PDF file by e-mail to: benedikt.schweiger@tum.de

The position is suitable for disabled persons. Disabled applications will be given preference in case of generally equivalent ability, aptitude and professional performance.

Optimierung sektorengekoppelter Energiesysteme

Wissenschaftliche:r Mitarbeiter:in (f/m/d, Vollzeit) zur Optimierung sektorengekoppelter Energiesysteme

30.09.2026, Academic staff
