Description of the post

Subject of Thesis

Developing efficient and selective catalytic transformations from abundant elements of the periodic table remains a major challenge for sustainable chemistry and energy conversion. Natural enzymes achieve remarkable catalytic rates and high selectivity using these metals through accurate monitoring of the active site and the chemical environment in which they operate. Inspired by this principle, we propose to use polymer topology to create an adjustable environment around an existing molecular catalyst. Anchoring an active site on the skeleton of a polymer offers a fundamentally different level of environmental control. The steric footprint between the densely grafted chains generates an intrinsically extended conformation, whose skeleton length, graft density, lateral chain length and chemical functionality can be varied independently. These structural parameters directly control the catalyst environment.
The aim of this thesis will therefore be to synthesize polymers with programmable architecture and composition and to attach a catalytic grouping to them.
The skills expected:
We are looking for a motivated candidate with a degree in chemical engineering. Knowledge of polymer chemistry is an asset. The ability to work as a team, in an interdisciplinary environment, and good communication skills are essential as the PhD student will work with several CERMAV and UIUC researchers with complementary expertise in chemistry, analytical chemistry, biochemistry, and physico-chemistry.

Your Working Environment

The PhD student will work at the Centre de Recherche sur les Macromolecules Vegetales (Unité Propre de Recherche CNRS), located on Grenoble's university campus. Our laboratory is based on a strong culture of interdisciplinarity, bringing together expertise in chemistry, physicochemistry, biology and materials science. This integrated approach allows it to occupy an important place, at the international level, in the areas of leading research of sugars (mono, oligo- and polysaccharides): their synthesis in vivo and in vitro, their characterization, as well as their functions and applications to meet major societal challenges in the fields of human health, new energies and materials of the future.
The work will be carried out in close collaboration with several researchers and engineers at the DCM (Département de chimie de Moleculare de Grenoble) with complementary skills covering the production of inorganic catalysts, their structural characterisation and their catalytic activities for the reduction of water and carbon dioxide, as part of a project funded by CNRS Chemistry.
