At the Geophysics Institute (GFI), the University of Bergen, there is a vacancy as a PhD fellow in climate dynamics. The position is for an annual period of three years, with the possibility of a fourth year of career advancement, for example for teaching, depending on the needs of the institute. The candidate will be part of NorCPMNext, a strategic project at the Bjerknesenter für Klimaforskning (BCCR) which aims to further develop sub-seasonal to seasonal forecasts of regional climate and extreme events using hybrid physics-KI models.
Whether the project/work tasks
There is an increasing need for sub-seasonal to seasonal forecasts (S2S; 2 weeks to 12 months) for regional climate-related hazards and extreme events such as heat waves, heavy rainfall and extreme sea ice conditions, due to the large environmental, social and economic impacts they may have. Physics-based soil system models and climate forecasting systems form the basis for modern climate forecasting, but it is cost-effective to run them with resolutions that are relevant for impact assessments. Artificial intelligence (KI) gives new possibilities to overcome this constraint. At the same time, the weaknesses of pure data-driven methods, especially for longer forecast horizons, show that there is a need to combine AI with physics-based models. Hybrid physics-KI modelling is therefore becoming a promising path towards accurate, physically consistent and effective climate projections.
This PhD project will focus on AI-based gross resolution scaling of climate model results to provide action-oriented climate information at regional and local level. The resulting high-resolution predictions will be useful in user-oriented case studies assessing the risk associated with extreme events in Norway. In this way, the project will demonstrate the potential of the next generation of hybrid physics-KI climate forecasting system.
The work will be carried out in close cooperation with scientific partners in NorCPMNext, a strategic project involving the University of Bergen, NERSC (Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Centre) and NORCE (Norwegian Research Centre). The University of Bergen offers an international working environment through BCCR, the largest climate research centre in the Nordic region and one of the leading centres in Europe, with about 200 researchers from 37 countries.
