Motivation
We are working on one of the most important challenges of our time: the CASE megatrends (Connected, Autonomous, Shared, Electric) are fundamentally changing people's mobility. In the future, we need to focus more on digital, sustainable and shared solutions to meet our transport demand.
In the Smart Mobility Lab, we develop data-driven methods for the analysis, evaluation and optimization of future mobility systems. Together with partners from research, industry and the public sector, we support the introduction of autonomous mobility services in the Munich transport area. This creates unique data sets from real vehicle fleets, operating platforms and transport systems. Become part of the Smart Mobility Lab at the Chair of Vehicle Technology and actively shape the future of mobility.
Your Challenge
We are looking for innovative applicants with initiative and drive for action, who want to promote the data-driven evaluation and simultaneous further development of autonomous mobility services with their doctorate. The aim is not only to evaluate autonomous on-demand and hybrid traffic in the Munich practice test field scientifically, but also to design the scalable operating models of tomorrow's public transport from the real operating data.
At the centre of your work is a closed knowledge cycle: from the real test field you gain operating, vehicle and disposition data, bring them together and advertise them scientifically. To do this, you develop data models, data pipelines and monitoring systems that map and evaluate the real-time operation of autonomous mobility services.
On this basis, you develop methods for the performance evaluation of autonomous mobility services: KPI frameworks, time series analyses and anomaly detection for the evaluation of service quality, operational efficiency and scalability. You use the insights gained to calibrate a simulative digital twin of test field operation with real data, to model new operating logics and multi-operator scenarios and to derive data-based recommendations for future mobility services in public transport.
Your profile
As an ideal candidate you have a very good (≤1,9) master's degree in computer science, data science, traffic engineering, industrial engineering or a comparable technical-scientific discipline. You enjoy understanding complex data structures, deriving scientific findings from large amounts of data and converting them into models for the mobility of the future.
You have sound programming knowledge, especially in Python, as well as experience with databases, SQL and data processing. Knowledge of data engineering, machine learning, time series analysis, dashboarding, or traffic. Agent-based simulation is an advantage. Above all, however, you bring your own initiative, analytical thinking and enthusiasm for the mobility of the future. Negotiable German and good knowledge of English are prerequisites.
Your Chances
As part of our team, you are working on one of the largest real laboratories for autonomous mobility in Germany. You will gain access to unique operating and vehicle data and develop scientific methods that flow directly into real mobility offers. Instead of limiting yourself to one aspect, you are responsible for the entire chain from real data collection to evaluation to the simultaneous design of new operating models.
Modern server infrastructures, extensive data platforms and an interdisciplinary network of research, industry and public actors are at your disposal. As part of your doctorate, you publish scientific papers on topics such as evaluation of autonomous mobility services, KPI frameworks, real-world performance assessment, real data calibrated simulation and simulation-based evaluation of operating models.

Motivation
