Promotional Office – Characterization of Functionalized Magnetic Nanoparticles (m/w/d)

28.05.2026,Academic staff

The doctoral student will work as part of the BMWE composite project "Winning of critical raw materials such as lithium, rare earths and metals/half-metals from multi-water/LiMare", subproject "Synthesis of magnetic nanoparticles, functionalization with selective phases and analytical & water chemical characterization". The aim is to develop and establish analytical methods for physi.-chem. Characterization of functionalized magnetic nanoparticles.

The position is in the Raman & REM Group at the Chair of Analytical Chemistry and Water Chemistry, Institute of Water Chemistry (IWC), TUM School of Natural Sciences (Dep. Chemistry), Technical University of Munich (TUM). The group focuses on the development and establishment of Raman-based methods for the analysis of complex samples, with particular emphasis on automation and online/high-throughput analytics.
The doctoral student will work as part of the BMWK composite project "Acquisition of critical raw materials such as lithium, rare earths and metals/half-metals from multi-water / LiMare", subproject "Synthesis of magnetic nanoparticles, functionalization with selective phases and analytical & water chemical characterization". The subproject will be carried out at the IWC-TUM in cooperation with the group of Prof. Dr. Seidel (Bioanalytics and Microanalytic Systems). There, MNPs are synthesized and functionalized with metal organic frameworks (MOFs) or crown networks. The aim of the doctoral thesis is the development and establishment of analytical methods for the physicochemical characterization of functionalized MNPs in order to achieve a targeted optimization of the production of MNPs with best efficiency. For this purpose, field flow fractionation (FFF) is used for online size fractionation and physicochemical characterization (FFF multidetectors, including Raman) as well as collection of fractions for further offline investigations (DLS, NTA, (Kryo-)REM/EDX, ICP-MS, μRaman).
We invite you to apply for a PhD position and offer you:
• 3-year-old doctoral candidate in the Raman & SEM group, IWC-TUM
• Support, mentoring and support by PD Dr. Natalia P. Ivleva
• Wide range of further and further training opportunities within the framework of the Graduate Center NAT
• Modern laboratory facilities, including field flow fractionation (FFF), Raman microspectroscopy, (Kryo-)REM/EDX, (sp)-ICP-MS and NTA equipment
• An appreciative and collegial working atmosphere with flat hierarchies and plenty of space for independent, creative work
• Opportunities for scientific cooperation with German and international partners
What will make you successful:
• Excellent Master's degree in (analytical) chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering or a similar subject
• High motivation and capacity for independent, systematic and reliable scientific work
• Analytical, creative and solution-oriented thinking
• Extensive experience in chemical, analytical and spectroscopic laboratories
• Very good knowledge of English in word and writing; German skills are welcome
Application procedure:
Please send a PDF file with a letter of motivation, a CV, Bachelor's and Mast products and performance reports (Transcripts of Records), the contact details of two reference persons, a summary of your Master's thesis (maximum one page), and, if available, copies of your publications (first page).
Please send your documents to PD Dr. Natalia P. Ivleva (natalia.ivleva@tum.de).
Application deadline: 15.06.2026.
We look forward to receiving your application!
The IWC is committed to equal opportunities, diversity and respectful cooperation. We welcome applications regardless of gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion or belief, disability, age, sexual orientation and identity.

The position is suitable for disabled persons. Disabled applications will be given preference in case of generally equivalent ability, aptitude and professional performance.

Promotionsstelle – Charakterisierung von Funktionalisierten Magnetischen Nanopartikeln (m/w/d)

28.05.2026, Academic staff
