Professor of Industrial Design

Industrial design is a broad and changing area that addresses environmental, societal and technological challenges through design, research and experimentation. We are looking for an innovative and curious professor who wants to inspire and educate tomorrow's designers, and who in a holistic way can contribute to the continued development of the subject through design practice, research and collaborations.

Konstfack is Sweden's largest artistic university in art, design and crafts. Since 1844 we have trained a variety of professionals in these fields, as well as picture and handicraft teachers. The current position is based on the focus Design at the Department of Design, Interior Architecture and Visual Communication (DIV), where both education and research are conducted in these areas. The department conducts educations at bachelor, master and doctoral level. At the department, artistic practice is combined with critical and community-oriented knowledge development. DIV's research environment is under development, and as a professor you are expected to share the responsibility for leading the development within the focus Design.

The two courses offered within the focus design follow a progressive educational structure with a strong foundation on sustainability issues. At the Bachelor's Programme in Industrial Design (180 credits) the student gets a broad foundation in industrial design through artistic design, design and design methodology, while at the same time exploring materials, techniques and digital media in relation to users. Students develop physical, theoretical, and digital skills and gain an understanding of their future profession through collaboration with industry and society. The Master's Programme Design Ecologies (120 credits) builds on this foundation, expands theoretical and methodological knowledge, and maintains strong anchoring in material and spatial practice. During the course, students explore relationships between people and other life forms from different perspectives, which prepares them for both professional and research careers.

Main tasks

With this recruitment there will be two professors who lead the direction Design. The professors share the artistic and educational responsibility for the subject areas.  An important responsibility for the professors is to actively contribute to the development of the research environment within the subject area and at Konstfack in general.

Tasks include:

• Shared responsibility for the artistic and educational leadership within the college, as well as for the development of the subject area
• Active participation in teaching at basic, advanced and doctoral level
• Strengthening national and international collaboration with academia, professions and societal actors
• Conducting research in the field
• Leading, developing and expanding the research environment
• Initiating research applications and applying for external funding nationally and internationally
• To participate in Konstfack's joint work, as well as to be part of Intercultural and Institution-specific Working Groups

Employment

The employment covers 60–100 percent of full-time for a maximum of five years with the possibility of re-employment for a maximum of five years. The desired admission is in April-June 2027. The working hours are located at Konstfack with several occasions every working week. Distance work from abroad is not possible. Competence requirements and assessment criteria

Eligibility requirements and assessment criteria for the employment of teachers are specified in the Higher Education Ordinance and the order of employment of Konstfack. ‘Competition requirements' means the minimum requirements that need to be met in order to be relevant to the employment. Assessment criteria refer to the factors that are assessed in addition to the eligibility requirements, if the eligibility requirements are met.

The eligibility requirements for this position are:

• Higher education at least advanced level relevant to the content of the employment or other professional experience deemed equivalent by reference to the content of the employment
• Documented pedagogic skills in higher education or other relevant education
• Documented practice in industrial design and/or product design
• Documented experience of collaboration within or outside academia
• Experience of conducting research relevant to the subject
• Artistic Skill
• Good English Language Skills

The assessment criteria for this position are:

• Special skills in industrial design and/or product design, demonstrated by an established professional and/or research practice.
• Good experience in leading collegial development work and good communication skills
• Good ability to initiate, manage and develop research projects and environments, and attract external funding
• Good Pedagogical Skill
• Good Artistic Skill
• Good ability to integrate critical perspectives, including sustainability and transition perspectives, into research and teaching
• Good knowledge of current research in the field of industrial design and/or product design
• Doctoral degree in relevant subject area
• Active in national and/or international networks relevant to the topic
• Good organisational and administrative capacity
• Good language skills in Swedish or other Scandinavian language
