Scientific Data Group

You will be part of the Scientific Data Group within the technical department at Max IV Laboratory. We develop and operate high-performance systems for data collection to advanced detectors and provide solutions for data processing, visualization and analysis that enable researchers to quickly interpret results from experiments in X-ray spreading, imaging and spectroscopy. Our systems regularly handle data flows on several GB / s and support large-scale scientific data workflows.

To support sustainable data management at the next-generation photocharient research facilities, we are now looking for a postdoctoral doctor that will further develop workflows for data reduction and compression of scientific data for tomography and imaging applications in collaboration with European research infrared

This includes established tomography capabilities in Danmax and Formax, and the development of Tomowise, a dedicated next generation of emptyography conditions that are currently being built. The successful candidate will cooperate closely with researchers and engineers who develop the future imaging opportunities at MAX IV, while working together with experts in tomography, scientific data processing, data management and research software around Europe.

Your work will contribute to practical solutions that significantly reduce data volumes while maintaining scientific quality and reproducibility. The project combines scientific research, software development and international cooperation, and provides opportunities to influence future best practices for data management at large-scale research facilities.

The work includes, among other things, benchmarking and validation of compression algorithms, the development of software tools and workflows, the production of quality measures and best practices, cooperation with partner facilities, organization of workshops and training efforts and dissemination of

Your main tasks are to:

  • Evaluate and benchmarking methods for data reduction and destructive data compression using the representative tomography and image data from MAX IV and cooperating facilities.
  • Develop software tools, workflows and validation methods that support the introduction of compression technology in scientific environments.
  • Collaborate with beamline researchers to evaluate how data reduction methods affect scientific results and data quality.
  • Contribute to guidelines, best practices and knowledge resources within scientific data reduction, data compression and FAIR data management.
  • Collaborate with researchers and technical experts in European research facilities to promote knowledge exchange and technology transfer.
  • Support and coordinate the project's workshops, educational activities and communication efforts.
  • Spread project results through reports, technical documentation, presentations, workshops and scientific publications.

Qualifications

To be successful in the role you need:

  • Doctoral degree in computer science, applied mathematics, physics, technology, scientific data processing, image processing, data science or nearby area.
  • Documented experience with scientific programming, development of scientific software or DataTunga calculation environments.
  • Experience of Python and at least a high performance programming language such as C ++, Rust or Julia.
  • Experience of work with large-scale scientific dataset, image processing, calculation-based imaging, tomography analysis or data compression.
  • Experience of Linux-based calculation environments and modern software development methods, including version management and cooperation-based development.
  • Very good ability to communicate in speech and writing in English.
  • Ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary and international research environment.

Merit Qualifications

  • Experience of synchrotron plants, neutron facilities, electron microscopy, medical image diagnosis or other large-scale imaging facilities.
  • Experience of scientific data formats and technologies such as HDF5, Nexus and Zarr.
  • Knowledge of FAIR principles and research data management.
  • Experience of high performance data processing (HPC), cloud-based data processing, GPU acceleration or distributed data processing.
  • Experience of international research collaboration and / or research projects involving several organizations.

Permissions

For employment as postdoctoral, a doctoral degree or an international degree is deemed to correspond to a doctoral degree within the service area. The degree should normally have been delivered no more than three years before the deadline. Under special circumstances, graduates may be older than three years. This is a full-time employment for some time in two years.

The Scientific Data Group

You will join the Scientific Data Group within the Technical Division of MAX IV Laboratory. We develop and operate high-performance data acquisition systems for cutting-edge detectors and provide data processing, visualisation and analysis solutions that enable researchers to rapidly interpret results from X-ray scattering, imaging and spectroscopy experiments. Our systems routinely handle data rates of several GB/s and support large-scale scientific data workflows. To support sustainable data management at next-generation photon science facilities, we are seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher to advance scientific data reduction and compression workflows for tomography and imaging applications in collaboration with European research infrastructures.

The Position

The rapid growth of data volumes generated by modern imaging experiments is creating significant challenges for data storage, transfer, processing and long-term preservation. Through a collaborative European initiative involving leading photon science facilities, MAX IV is developing sustainable approaches to scientific data reduction and scientifically validated lossy-compression methods for tomography and imaging applications.

As a PostDoc you will contribute to the evaluation, development, validation and deployment of advanced data reduction and compression methodologies for large-scale imaging datasets. Working at the interface between scientific computing, image analysis and research infrastructures, you will collaborate closely with scientists, software engineers, beamline scientists and computing specialists across the European photon science community.

The project is carried out in close collaboration with leading European photon science facilities through the LEAPS community. The position offers a unique opportunity to engage directly with MAX IV's full-field X-ray imaging and tomography activities. These span the established tomography capabilities at DanMAX and ForMAX, together with the development of TomoWISE, a dedicated next-generation tomography beamline currently under construction. The successful candidate will work closely with scientists and engineers developing future imaging capabilities at MAX IV while collaborating with experts in tomography, scientific computing, data management and research software engineering across Europe.

Your work will contribute to practical solutions that significantly reduce data volumes while preserving scientific quality and reproducibility. The project combines scientific research, software development and international collaboration, offering opportunities to influence community-wide best practices for data handling at large-scale research facilities. Activities include benchmarking and validating compression algorithms, developing software tools and workflows, establishing quality metrics and best practices, collaborating with partner facilities, organising workshops and training activities, and disseminating results through publications and presentations.
