PhD POSITION IN ENVIRONMENTAL GEOCHEMISTRY / CHROMIUM ISOTOPE GEOCHEMISTRY

We offer a fully funded PhD position within the Czech part of the international project “Chromium transformation in the soil-water-plant continuum at ambient temperature and during fire using stable isotopes as biogeochemical tracer (ISOCHROME)”, funded by the Czech Science Foundation-FWF Weave programme. The successful candidate will join the research team at the Department of Environmental Geosciences, Czech University of Life Sciences Prague (CZU), in collaboration with the University of Vienna.

RESEARCH TOPIC

The project aims to develop Cr stable isotopes as tracers of chromium transformation processes in soils and the soil-water-plant system. The research will focus on Cr redox transformations, mobilization by organic ligands, plant uptake and translocation, cyclic redox processes, and temperature-driven transformations associated with wildfires and agricultural fires.

The PhD student will contribute to laboratory experiments, sample preparation and chemical and isotope analyses, interpretation of isotope fractionation, and preparation of scientific publications. Experimental work will include mineral and soil systems, plant cultivation, hydroponic experiments, redox oscillations, and controlled biomass/soil heating.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Designing and conducting laboratory experiments in environmental geochemistry.
  • Preparation and chemical characterization of soil, mineral and plant samples.
  • Cr concentration, speciation and stable isotope analyses using ICP-MS, TIMS, MC ICP MS and related techniques.
  • Chemical separation of Cr using ion-exchange chromatography and application of isotope fractionation models.
  • Data evaluation, interpretation and preparation of scientific manuscripts.
  • Presentation of results at international conferences and participation in international collaboration.
  • Working at both CZU in Prague and the University of Vienna through a structured exchange programme.

REQUIREMENTS

  • MSc degree in environmental geochemistry, geochemistry, analytical chemistry, environmental chemistry, soil science, or a related field.
  • Interest in laboratory-based environmental research and chemical analyses.
  • Good scientific writing and data interpretation skills.
  • Experience with isotope geochemistry, ICP-MS/TIMS, chromatography, soil or plant experiments is an advantage.
  • Good command of English.

WE OFFER

  • Fully funded PhD position within an international research project.
  • Net salary of approximately EUR 1,000/month, plus a part-time (~20%) employment at the Czech Geological Survey (lab work and MC ICP MS measurement) with additional remuneration of several thousand CZK/month.
  • Student accommodation on campus (cca 6,000 CZK/month)
  • Full medical insurance and social security benefits.
  • 40 days of paid holiday per year.
  • A structured exchange programme providing research experience at both CZU in Prague and the University of Vienna.
  • Opportunities for international collaboration, conference travel and scientific publications.
  • Access to state-of-the-art laboratory facilities, including TIMS, ICP-MS, ICP-OES, XRD and other analytical and experimental equipment.
  • International working environment at CZU in Prague and the University of Vienna.
  • Excellent campus facilities, including a swimming pool, gym, athletic track, and indoor and outdoor sports fields.
  • Living in Prague, one of the safest cities in the world, with excellent public transportation, international accessibility, and high-quality healthcare.
