Motivation

With EDGAR, we operate one of the few research vehicles in Germany that is autonomously on the road. Our goal is to bring problems out of reality into research in order to solve them sustainably and lead them back to application. In doing so, we are pursuing an open source strategy with which we share our progress. In the Autonomous Vehicle Lab, we are actively working on a European L4 software stack and publishing our research at international conferences.

EDGAR's perception is limited by the field of view of its own sensors. Covers at intersections and situations beyond line-of-sight remain systematically unobservable. Cooperative perception could address this limit, but has been investigated primarily in simulation so far. In the TUM-coordinated Horizon Europe project SENSE, we are investigating how such processes can be integrated into a vehicle software stack under real conditions and what robustness gains are possible. Become part of our team!

Your Challenge

As part of the EDGAR team, you are responsible for TUM's vehicle-side contribution within SENSE. Your focus is to expand EDGAR's perception beyond your own sensors. You are developing a merger that combines, among other things, V2X received information from infrastructure and other road users with the onboard software stack.

The scientific challenge lies in the irregularity, the time offset and the different accuracy of the data received. To create a time-consistent environment model from these contributions to the duration and to decide which information will improve your own state of perception and how they will be merged is at the heart of your work. Added to this is the integration directly on the vehicle. V2X-On-Board-Unit, connection to the Autoware stack, real-time and resource-efficient on the Compute platform. You will first carry out the proof on our test field and then in real mixed traffic in Munich.

You have the opportunity to bring in your own ideas and test them directly on the research vehicle, work as part of the EDGAR team on our software stack and represent your results to the European project partners.

Your profile

As an ideal candidate you have a very good master's degree in computer science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, mathematics or a similar subject. You burn for autonomous systems and for software that exists in real traffic. You also bring the following qualifications:

  • Strength in communication and organization to assert yourself at the interface between science and business
  • Negotiable knowledge of German and English (min. Level B2)
  • Very good programming knowledge in Python and C++ as well as sound experience with ROS 2
  • First experience in software development for autonomous vehicles, robotics or perception
  • Ready to travel for project meetings and international conferences
  • Willingness to help shape the Autonomous Vehicle Lab through your commitment

Your Chances

As part of our team, you actively shape the development of automated vehicles and build up a valuable network of industry and science actors – within a European consortium with eleven partners. You have extensive server infrastructures, our test field as well as the research vehicle EDGAR at your disposal. You take responsibility in the project right from the start and work in a team that works together with you to create autonomous driving. As part of your work, you continuously develop your knowledge, pass it on and supervise study work.

We offer

  • Temporary full-time post according to TV-L E-13 100 % for a total of 3 years (2 + 1)
  • Possibility of promotion and start-up
  • Innovative research area with high topicality and relevance
  • Modern working environment and infrastructure
  • Flexible working hours including home office
  • Own budget for training courses and meetings
  • Possibility to stay abroad
  • Start possible: from now on

Motivation
