Description of the post

Subject of Thesis

In the context of the evolution of the energy mix towards a decline in the share of fossil fuels, the development of new stationary energy storage systems is crucial. Indeed, the intermittent and variable nature of renewable energy sources such as wind or photovoltaics requires storage. The Redox-Flow (Redox-Flow) batteries, which allow a decoupling between energy and power, are therefore perfectly suited to this specification. This technology has undeniable advantages over the Li-Ion systems currently in development for this type of application, particularly in terms of safety and recycling.
However, currently the most mature and deployed Redox-Flow batteries (vanadium batteries, studied since the 1980 years) remain expensive and limited in terms of stability and capacity.
The project aims to develop a full circulation battery technology based on the circulation of aqueous solutions of redox mediators in the presence of sodium insertion materials immobilized in the reservoirs. The use of these insertion materials will increase the energy density of these batteries and thus potentially reduce their size. These materials will be free of toxic or expensive metal. As part of a European project, the LRCS will be responsible for the preparation of high-performance insertion materials for this new type of storage systems.
In this context, we are looking for a motivated PhD student who will be responsible for the preparation and characterization of sodium insertion materials. The person recruited will have to have skills in material science and if possible in electrochemistry with skills for collaborative work.

Your Working Environment

The project is funded under the European FLOWBOOST project. The work will be carried out at the LRCS in Amiens and co-supervised by Emmanuel Baudrin (LRCS) and Dominique Larcher (LRCS). The Ph.D. will have to have expertise in inorganic chemistry and/or material chemistry, and characterization of these systems using conventional physico-chemical methods. Concepts or skills in electrochemistry would be appreciated.
The post is located in an area of scientific and technical potential protection (STPP), and therefore requires, in accordance with the regulations, that your arrival be authorized by the competent authority of the SEPM.
