Description of the post

Subject of Thesis

Operation multi-scale studies of all-solid battery densification
All-solid batteries (SSBs) are a promising way to increase energy density and improve the safety of Li-ion batteries. Among solid electrolytes, thiophosphates have high potential, but their performance depends heavily on their densification and the quality of the interfaces formed during manufacturing.
This thesis aims to understand, at different scales, the mechanisms of densification of thiophosphate composite electrolytes and electrodes, as well as the evolution of their microstructure, interfaces and electrochemical properties under pressure and during cycling. Particular attention will be paid to the influence of porosity and microstructure on the penetration and spread of metallic lithium.
As part of the collaborative ANR-SoDense project, the work will combine experimental approaches in laboratories and large research infrastructures. Structural and microstructural characterizations in situ and operaando, at different scales, will link manufacturing and densification processes to the microstructure and electrochemical performance of solid batteries.
The ultimate objective is to contribute to a better understanding of the mechanisms limiting the performance of SSBs and to the optimization of their manufacturing processes for their wider development.

Your Working Environment

The PhD student will be based primarily at the Institut Lumière Matière (ILM) and will work in a highly collaborative environment involving the ILM, LEPMI in Grenoble, as well as the SOLEIL and ESRF synchrotrons. The Institut Lumière Matière (iLM) is a joint CNRS research unit - Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1, located on the LyonTech-La Doua campus. With 320 collaborators, about a third of whom are PhD students and post-doctoral fellows, the iLM is a centre of excellence in physics and chemistry in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, enjoying international recognition for the quality of its work.
At the ILM, she/he will use high pressure presses for densification and sintering of materials, as well as various characterization techniques, including Raman spectroscopy and diffraction. Stays in the major partner infrastructures, especially on the high pressure line PSICHE of the synchrotron SOLEIL, will allow to carry out multi-technical experiments in situ and operaando, including tomography.
We are looking for a highly motivated person, trained in physics, materials science or materials engineering. A strong interest in experimental research and material characterization is expected. A prior experience of high-pressure techniques will be an asset, but not an indispensable one.
