Description of the post

Subject of Thesis

"Competition and algorithms: adoption, impact and transparency":
The PhD project is part of a multi-institutional research programme dedicated to the study of competition in digital markets, with particular emphasis on algorithmic pricing, consumer decision-making systems and transparency issues arising from advanced digital infrastructures such as new generation networks (6G and beyond).
Scientific background and objectives:
Digital technologies are profoundly transforming competitive interactions by enabling companies to rely on automated decision-making systems to define their pricing and business strategies. In particular, price algorithmic readjustment tools allow real-time adjustment of prices on the basis of predefined rules or machine learning techniques. Although recent theoretical work has examined the effects of algorithmic pricing on market outcomes, the factors determining the adoption of these technologies by firms and their transition from one technology to another are still poorly understood. Similarly, consumer behaviour with regard to the use of algorithmic pricing warrants further investigation.
The project has three interrelated objectives:
• Analyze the incentives for companies to adopt pricing algorithms and how the characteristics of these algorithms influence competition.
• Provide new empirical evidence on the prevalence and impact of algorithmic pricing based on data from French market places.
• Study consumer perceptions, transparency concerns and regulatory implications associated with observable algorithmic pricing practices.
Methodology:
Doctoral research can combine three complementary methodological approaches:
• Theoretical modelling (theory of games and/or models based on agents) to formalize strategic interactions involving algorithmic pricing technologies.
• Empirical analysis of real price data (e.g. from e-commerce platforms) to detect algorithmic pricing behaviour and assess its effects on competition.
• Experimental methods (laboratory or online experiments) to study consumer behaviour, acceptability of such practices and reactions to different transparency regimes.
Expected competencies:
The candidate will have to hold a master's degree attesting to very solid knowledge in theoretical modeling (game theory, theoretical models used in industrial economy), digital economy (knowledge of the ecosystem and the stakes of the digital economy) and quantitative techniques (automated data collection, econometrics). Knowledge of experimental economics would also be appreciated.
The position requires very good oral and written communication skills, presentation of the work carried out at congresses and for the writing of articles to be published in academic journals.
Documents to be provided: the cover letter, the thesis project, the master's memory and the master's notes 1 and 2.

Your Working Environment

The thesis will be carried out within the EconomiX unit and the EOS doctoral school of the Université Paris Nanterre.
Created in 2005 following the merger of four CNRS units, EconomiX is a Joint Research Unit (UMR 7235) under the dual supervision of CNRS and Université Paris Nanterre. It is part of the INHS and is attached to the economics and management section of the National Committee of the CNRS.
Bringing together about 180 members, EconomiX is one of the major French economics centers. Research activities are structured around three axes:
Transitions, Environment, Energy, Institutions, Territories; Behaviour, Rights & Well-being; International macroeconomics, finance, raw materials and financial econometrics. The research carried out here would be more specific within the "Behavior, Rights & Well-being" axis to which the doctoral student will be attached.

Constraints and risks

Thesis work involves regular attendance at the research laboratory as well as participation in the activities of this laboratory (participation and facilitation of research seminars, participation in the organisation of conferences). The thesis being carried out within the framework of the EOS doctoral school, this also implies the monitoring of the rules of operation of this doctoral school (rules of advancement, follow-up of doctoral courses, etc.). The thesis work can be presented at colloquia organised by other universities, which will involve one-off trips.
