The dean of the Faculty of Arts, Charles University, invites applications for job vacancy with a deadline for applications November 15, 2026

Job description:
  • management and organization of educational and creative activities of the institute
  • responsibility for educational and creative activities of the institute
  • responsibility for cost-effective use of the faculty’s financial resources at the institute’s disposal
  • responsibility for administrative operations of the institute
  • teaching (according to the expertise of the staff member and the study programmes of the institute)
  • thesis supervision
  • individual research programme and creative activity development
  • participation in other activities of the institute
  • Pay grade: AP2/AP3/AP4 (CZK 39,000 / 46,000 / 55,000 per month, respectively).
If a candidate who is not currently a member of the academic staff of the Faculty of Arts, Charles University, is successful in the selection procedure, they will be offered an employment contract as a member of the academic staff and subsequently appointed by the Dean of the Faculty as the Director of the Institute of Asian Studies. If the successful applicant is already a member of the academic staff of the Faculty of Arts, they will be appointed by the Dean of the Faculty as the Director of the Institute of Asian Studies. The Dean reserves the right to cancel the selection procedure at any stage.

If the career development plan is required, it must aim to commence the habilitation procedure (procedure for the granting of associate professorship) no later than nine years after the expected beginning of employment.

Based on the committee’s decision, either all applicants or selected applicants only will be invited to the second round of the competition, i.e. an interview.

The Dean of the Charles University Faculty of Arts reserves the right to cancel the selection procedure at any time during its course. Each participant in the selection procedure bears his/her own costs and is not entitled to reimbursement.

Qualifications

  • completed doctoral studies with a focus on Asian studies and at least five years of work at an academic or research institution
  • Professor / Associate Professor / Assistant Professor, or a corresponding academic title from a foreign university
  • at least five years of previous teaching, research and other creative activity in the field of Asian studies with an international dimension
  • insight into the academic fields of both former units, the Department of Sinology and the Institute of Asian Studies
  • good command of Czech (C2) and English (C1), both written and spoken; command of at least one Asian language (C1), both written and spoken; knowledge of an additional Asian language is an advantage; organizational and communication skills
  • managerial skills; experience with leading research teams or a specialized department is an advantage
  • experience with managing scientific projects and grants is an advantage
  • a concept of development of the institute (includes plans for at least three years, maximum length is 10 pages), focusing on the key areas of teaching and research pursued so far at the Department of Sinology and the Institute of Asian Studies
The concept, which will also be publicly presented to the staff of the Institute of Asian Studies as part of the selection procedure, includes in particular:
  • An assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of the current concept and delivery of teaching
  • Development of teaching activities, with emphasis on the accreditation strategy for undergraduate and postgraduate study programmes and for habilitation and professorship appointment procedures at the institute
  • A plan for qualification and human resources development of the institute, with regard to securing accreditations and developing creative activities
  • Development of research activities across the wide range of fields pursued at the Faculty of Arts
  • Development of the institute’s international cooperation in teaching and research
  • Prospects for further development of the institute (project activities, inter-faculty cooperation, the university’s third mission)
Attachment No. 1: Applicants with an academic qualification for the position of Assistant Professor are required to provide confirmation of the initiation of a habilitation procedure or a general research development plan outlining the steps towards initiating such a procedure.
