Description of the post

Subject of Thesis

Cognitive control keeps behaviour aligned with current objectives while adapting when circumstances change. Yet we still do not have a unified framework for the processes involved and their brain implementation. While research has traditionally focused on the prefrontal cortex, data from patients with thalamic infarction and system neuroscience suggest that the mediodorsal nucleus of thalamus and its interactions with the frontal cortex may be a crucial element that is still missing.
This thesis will combine computational modelling, behavioural experiments and EEG, as well as simulated lesions of the model, in order to better understand thalamo-frontal mechanisms supporting adaptive behaviour.
The position is part of the THARMAC interdisciplinary project, developed with Lola Danet, Jérémie Pariente and Mélanie Planton.
Main Activity:
o Develop and test a Thalamofrontal Computational Model of Adaptive Cognitive Control to replicate established behavioural phenomena (e.g.: rule change costs/switch costs, learning dynamics) and associated neural dynamics (e.g. Frontal oscillations).
o Use simulations to guide the design of cognitive control tasks; design and conduct behavioural and EEG experiments with neurotypical adults, and then analyze the data collected.
o Develop "aggravated" versions of the model to predict deficits associated with disruption of thalamus, prefrontal cortex or connectivity.
Cross-cutting activity:
o Collaborate with another PhD student, focusing more on patient recruitment, clinical data, structural connectivity and fMRI, as well as neuroimaging researchers and clinicians involved in the project.
Profile sought:
o Master (Bac +5) in a relevant field: cognitive sciences, psychology, cognitive or computational neuroscience, mathematics/engineering, or related discipline.
o Strong interest in cognitive control, learning (by strengthening), decision-making, and real motivation to work with computational models, quantitative data, and programming.
o Experience in Python, R or other programming language is appreciated but not required; strong motivation to develop these skills is expected.
o Experience in computational/mathematic modelling (artificial neuron networks, dynamic systems), behavioural experiment design or electrophysiological data acquisition/analysis is appreciated but not required.
o Oral and written English sufficient to communicate and conduct scientific work; French about level B1 to interact with participants, or willingness to quickly reach this level at the beginning of the thesis.
o Curiosity, perseverance and demonstrated ability to learn; ability to work rigorously on complex and open issues; good organizational and collaborative skills.
